Texas Hill Country Tours from Austin

Wine, brisket and the ranch loop

West of the city the land turns to limestone hills, spring-fed rivers and towns with German names. Texas Hill Country tours from Austin sort your whole day — a driver for the two-lane roads, tastings at wineries you would not find alone, and brisket in Driftwood or time in Fredericksburg before the drive home. This page compares the four Austin departures worth booking, plus a private option based near New Braunfels, with what each one costs on the day.

A region built for day trips

The Hill Country begins where Austin's suburbs thin out, and it delivers the two ingredients a great day trip needs: something worth the drive and a way to get there without you at the wheel. Wine tastings and pit-room barbecue ask exactly one thing of you — that you not be behind the wheel afterward. Guided tours exist because that constraint, plus the distances between stops on two-lane roads, is a hard problem to solve in a rental car.

This page compares the four Austin departures worth booking this season, plus a private custom day listed from New Braunfels for travellers starting that way. The cards state prices, winery stops and cancellation terms as the listings carry them, and they say plainly what each ticket includes and where you will spend more at the counter.

Hill Country tours compared

Four Austin departures cover the hills west of the city. Two are wine days built around the Salt Lick, one adds presidential history and Fredericksburg, and one is a private brewery day you shape yourself. Every card states the winery stops, what is included and what you pay at the venue.

The shape of the day

How the recommended shuttle actually runs, from the downtown curb to the last tasting.

  1. Meet downtown

Check in inside the Austin Visitor Center at 103 E. Fifth Street. Metered street parking sits out front, and the Frost Bank Garage one block east runs over an hour free with a QR code from the Visitor Center.

  2. Drive west into the hills

The van climbs out of the city and into limestone country — the drive to Driftwood takes under an hour with the guide narrating the country you pass.

  3. Barbecue at the Salt Lick

A long stop at one of Texas's famous pit rooms, cooking over open flame in Driftwood. You pay for your plate here — the tour price covers the seat, not the meal.

  4. Two winery stops

Visits at two Hill Country wineries, with at least 45 minutes at each stop to taste — paid at the venue — walk the grounds or buy a bottle for the porch at home.

  5. Back in Austin by early evening

The return leg lands you at the same downtown corner roughly four and a half hours after departure — early enough for dinner back in the city.

Smoke, limestone and vines

What the Hill Country actually is

West and southwest of Austin, the land lifts into limestone hills threaded with springs, cypress-lined creeks and roads that roll rather than run. German settlers planted towns here in the 1840s and left their names on them — Fredericksburg, New Braunfels, Boerne — and the wine industry that grew in their valleys now fills weekends with tasting rooms. Our Hill Country primer covers the geography in detail if you want the full picture.

The touring reality is simpler: the anchor stops sit under an hour to about ninety minutes from downtown Austin — Driftwood closest, Johnson City midway, Fredericksburg farthest — spread along two-lane roads with no bus service. That spread is exactly what a guided day solves. The ranch-and-Fredericksburg day runs about eight hours door to door, the wine shuttles closer to five, and the private days flex to whatever you want on the clock.

One planning note worth more than any other: decide whether your day is a wine day. On the shuttle tours, tasting fees are yours to pay at each winery and you must be 21 or older to drink — but the venues welcome travellers who simply come for the view and a designated-driver-free ride home.

What the ticket covers — and what it does not

The clearest way to price a Hill Country wine day: the ticket moves you, everything at the stops is bought on site. The lines below are the recommended shuttle's own inclusion list.

Where your day starts

The recommended shuttle collects inside the Austin Visitor Center, two blocks off Congress Avenue. The other tours on this page use their own points — South Congress for the Long Horn tour, hotel pickup for the ranch and private days — and each booking confirms yours.

Know before you book

Winery stops, per tour
The recommended shuttle stops at two wineries. The Long Horn tour's current itinerary includes a Salt Lick BBQ stop and visits to Driftwood Estate and Wimberley Valley wineries.
Paid on the day
Barbecue plates and wine tastings are bought at the venues on both wine shuttles, and tasting fees also apply at the winery stop on the ranch day. The brewery day's guided tastings are in its price. Plan a card or cash for the first two.
Meeting points
The recommended shuttle leaves the Austin Visitor Center downtown. The Long Horn tour meets at a marked spot on South Congress. The ranch day and the brewery day collect at downtown hotels or an arranged Austin point. The custom day is the outlier — its pickup range is within 50 miles of New Braunfels.
Age rules
You must be 21 or older to buy or drink alcohol at the wineries and breweries. Travellers under 21 can ride the shuttles — they just taste the barbecue instead of the wine. The brewery day is adults-only.
Group sizes
The recommended shuttle caps at 11 travellers, the Long Horn tour at 12. The brewery and custom days are private — your group only, up to six and five respectively.
Cancellation
Every tour on this page allows free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure for a full refund.

What travellers say about the shuttle

The recommended tour's own reviewers, in our editors' words.

Traveller feedback, summarized by our editors.

  • United States · July 7, 2025

A good meal and a good day out, even though he was under the weather for it — he singles out the guide's empathy for making sure his partner still had a great time.

  • United States · June 22, 2025

Guide Joey gets the credit here — the tour was made fun and interesting well beyond the script.

  • New Zealand · June 6, 2025

A traveller from New Zealand found the day thoroughly enjoyable end to end. Their guide was friendly and full of local context, the Salt Lick food was delicious, and so were the wines at both wineries — their thanks go to the crew by name.

Hill Country tour questions

The details that decide which day and which ticket.

Which wine tour should I pick — the Visitor Center shuttle or the South Congress day?

The recommended shuttle (4.5 hours, from $69) keeps the day short with a downtown Visitor Center start and two winery stops. The Long Horn tour (5 hours, from $69) meets on South Congress, with a Salt Lick BBQ stop and visits to Driftwood Estate and Wimberley Valley wineries. Both leave lunch and tastings for you to buy at the venues.

How much should I budget beyond the ticket?

On either wine shuttle, plan for a barbecue lunch and a tasting flight at every winery you taste at. The recommended shuttle's listing suggests budgeting about $35 per person for the Salt Lick meal, with tastings set by each winery. Cash and cards are accepted at both the restaurant and the wineries.

Can I drink at the wineries and still get home safely?

That is the entire point of the shuttles. Your driver stays sober, the route home is theirs to worry about, and you are delivered back to the same downtown point you left from.

What does the LBJ Ranch day include?

An eight-hour loop with downtown hotel pickup: Johnson City, the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park with admission included, free time in Fredericksburg and a stop in Luckenbach. Tasting fees at the winery stop, food and museum admissions in Fredericksburg are extra. One note: the Texas White House itself is closed for restoration, with reopening expected in 2027 — the tour's own listing promises the house visit 'when available', and the day's value today is the ranch drive, the towns and the guide's storytelling.

Is the brewery day or private custom day worth it?

If beer beats wine for your group, the private brewery day runs a certified guide and guided tastings at three Hill Country breweries with custom Austin pickup, from $1,146 per group of up to six. The custom day (from $533 per group of up to five) is a blank canvas — Fredericksburg, Johnson City or Llano County scenic drives, caverns or river tubing when you choose them — planned with your driver-guide on the morning itself. Its pickup range is the catch: within 50 miles of New Braunfels, not Austin. Optional entries and activities are paid when chosen.

When is the best time of year for the Hill Country?

Spring for bluebonnets and green hills, late spring and early autumn for comfortable tasting weather, and October for Texas Wine Month, when the wineries run passport tastings across the region and Fredericksburg throws its food and wine festival. The grape harvest itself runs July through September. Summer afternoons are hot but the wineries are air conditioned — our road trip guide has a season-by-season breakdown.

Do the tours run in bad weather?

The shuttles run in rain with the itinerary adjusted where needed, and the standard 24-hour free cancellation applies if you decide not to go. Wine tasting indoors is a forgiving activity — the ranch day is the one most exposed to weather, since Fredericksburg time is spent walking Main Street.

Can I book a private Hill Country day for a larger group?

The two private tours here serve groups of up to six (brewery) and five (custom). For bigger groups, book multiple seats on the small-group shuttles — groups of ten or eleven can effectively take over the recommended shuttle's whole van.

The hills are 45 minutes away

Book the recommended shuttle and the whole day is sorted for $69 plus what you choose to spend at the table and the tasting bar. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before keeps the plan changeable.
